/ world today news/ The teams of China and the United States worked together to support the success of the Global Climate Conference (COP28), which was also one of the goals of the previous joint climate statement between the two countries, Xie Zhenghua, a special envoy, said on Wednesday of China on climate change. According to the words, both countries are expected to update their respective Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) in accordance with the requirements of the Paris Agreement and the results of this first-of-its-kind global inventory.
During the Dubai conference, China and the US agreed that following the requirements of the Paris Agreement, as well as the proposals made in the first global assessment, they will evaluate their long-term climate action strategies, and then based on it will update its nationally determined contributions to better implement the Paris Agreement, Xie Zhenghua told a news conference alongside the US president’s special climate envoy John Kerry.
“Here in Dubai, we have already fulfilled part of what was agreed at Sunnyland by working together to make the conference a success. When the negotiations stalled, we worked together and this helped break the deadlock in the negotiations and facilitated the success of the conference,” Xie noted.
He said China and the US have also agreed to set up joint working groups on climate change as soon as possible, including on areas such as energy transition, circular economy, methane and low-carbon sustainable provinces, states and cities. “The four working groups must step up their activities to implement our respective nationally determined contributions and to promote multilateral processes,” he said.
John Kerry said at the press conference that the Paris Agreement and the global balance sheet underscore the importance of developing and updating long-term strategies to reduce emissions and increase resilience. “Two years ago, the United States and China agreed to present updated long-term strategies at the Glasgow conference. We did just that. Today we announce our joint intention to review and update our long-term strategies going forward. I wanted to emphasize this commitment and take this opportunity to thank you for the efforts we have made together,” Kerry said.
