The Chinese smartphone company, Xiaomi, unveiled its first electric car on Thursday, and announced its goal to become one of the five largest automakers in the world.
At the launch event in Beijing, the company’s CEO, Li Jun, said: “The self-driving capabilities of Xiaomi cars will be at the forefront of the industry.”
The sedan, dubbed the SU7, is a model that is highly expected to make the most of its shared operating system with the company’s popular phones.
The move came at a time when the world’s largest car market is grappling with a glut and slowdown in demand, igniting a strong price war.
But this did not prevent John from showing great ambitions, including building a “dream car comparable to Porsche and Tesla.”
John said at the event that through hard work over the next 15 to 20 years, the company will become one of the five largest automakers in the world, and we strive to raise the level of the automotive sector in general in China.
Seek diversification
Xiaomi, like many other technology companies, is seeking to diversify beyond its core business to include electric vehicles; It is a plan that was first announced in 2021.
It has pledged to invest $10 billion in cars over a decade, and is one of the few new players in China’s electric car market as authorities have been reticent to add more to an already oversupplied market.
The Xiaomi-branded cars will be produced by a unit of the state-owned automaker BAIC at a factory in Beijing, with an annual capacity of 200,000 cars.
