Xiaomi SU7: New Electric Car Enters Luxury Sedan Market with Impressive Specs and Features

We can add another famous name to the list of car manufacturers – the Chinese Xioami has presented its first electric car, the SU7, with which it aims to enter the category of luxury sedans. The company has invested in advanced technologies, and the car’s parameters can boldly compete with the current top on the market.

Two motors and very fast charging

The SU7 will be available in the Chinese market in two variants, which will differ in capacity and battery type, as well as performance and range. The more powerful and more expensive version of the SU7 Max will be equipped with a pair of engines with a total output of 495 kW.

The driving force will be fast charging, which with the SU7 Max can charge a range of 200 km in 5 minutes, and energy for 510 km should be available in 15 minutes of charging.

Xiaomi at exhaustive presentation it also showed the technologies it will use in production. This will be provided by the Chinese manufacturer BAIC, which, among other things, produces Mercedes-Benz cars for the Chinese market. For example, so-called HyperCasting, which is used for casting aluminum structures using very high pressure, is similar to Giga Casting from Tesla.

An interesting feature are accumulators that use a CTB (cell-to-body) construction, where the accumulator itself forms part of the car’s structure. The batteries will be supplied by the Chinese giants CATL and BYD, with the cheaper model being the LFP type and the more expensive SU7 Max the NMC type. With it, Xiaomi will reach for a high-voltage architecture of 800 V with a maximum voltage of 871 V. The basic model will use a 400 V architecture.

Xiaomi SU7

  • Performance: 220 kW (400 Nm)
  • Accumulator: 73,6 kWh
  • Reach: 668 km (CLTC)
  • Acceleration 0-100 km/h: 5,28 s
  • Max. speed: 210 km/h

Xiaomi SU7 Max

  • Performance: 495 kW (838 Nm)
  • Accumulator: 101 kWh
  • Reach: 800 km (CLTC)
  • Acceleration 0-100 km/h: 2,78 s
  • Max. speed: 265 km/h

Brand new system

Xiaomi has developed the HyperOS operating system for its car, which in the case of a new car will drive a large central display with a 16.1″ diagonal and 3K resolution. The environment resembles what we know, for example, from iPad tablets, which can work with multiple application windows in the latest iPad OS versions. Here, too, the driver will be able to divide the display into thirds, for example, and use them for various applications such as navigation, messages or a music player. However, the phone screen can also be mirrored to the display. However, Xiaomi does not mention possible support for the Apple Car Play or Android Auto platforms, and one can rather count on their absence.

A specialty will be the CarloT system, which will extend the same software capabilities to other displays in the car. In the images, Xiaomi showed, for example, other large displays in front of the rear seats.

Own autopilot

Xiaomi is also developing another piece of software in-house – the autonomous control system will work with data from 11 cameras, 12 ultrasonic radars and lidar. By the end of 2024, cars should be able to drive fully autonomously in Chinese cities. The computing power will be taken care of by a unit built on a pair of Nvidia Orin-X chips. The internal display will be powered by the Snapdragon 8295 chip. In addition to the central display, there will be a separate 7.1″ display in front of the steering wheel as well as a HUD head-up display in the windshield.

The first Xiaomi cars will start driving on Chinese roads in February next year. The manufacturer has not yet announced the price, but you can count on the traditional pricing of around one million crowns in the case of the basic model. Deliveries to Europe or North America are not expected yet. In addition to bright blue, the SU7 will be available in two other colors – green and gray.
