Xiaomi Smartphones Will Have Earthquake Early Warning Features in Indonesia

Jakarta, Gizmologi – The Chinese technology company, Xiaomi, is collaborating with the Institute of Care Life in China and the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) to test the Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) feature in Indonesia. Through this feature, Xiaomi users will get notifications when an earthquake occurs in the vicinity.

This will make the earthquake early warning system play an important role in giving users time to save themselves. This feature will later warn users up to a dozen seconds before an earthquake occurs.

“Through this initiative, we hope to be able to help Indonesian citizens through CSR activities as a company that has social responsibility,” said the leader of Xiaomi in Indonesia, Alvin Tse, in a press release, quoted Friday (1/3/2022).

This earthquake early warning feature is compatible with Xiaomi smartphones using MIUI 12, MIUI 12.5, and MIUI 13. For this feature to be active, a data connection is required on the smartphone.

Xiaomi Indonesia has also completed the beta testing phase for devices that support it, before deciding to bring the feature to Indonesia. Where a warning notification will appear on the smartphone if the earthquake reaches the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) IV scale used by BMKG.

Earthquake Early Warning Notification

Later the Xiaomi smartphone will sound a warning tone when an earthquake occurs. Including displaying the scale (magnitude) of the earthquake, estimated arrival and intensity of the earthquake on the smartphone screen.

The way it works is by utilizing the speed of electric waves which are faster than secondary waves. Once this feature is activated on a Xiaomi smartphone, when the monitoring agency detects an earthquake, they will synchronize the earthquake early warning information to the Xiaomi server via a dedicated channel.

“We welcome the continued implementation of the pilot earthquake early warning system for Xiaomi smartphones. Evaluation will continue to be carried out to measure the level of success in Indonesia. We hope that this feature will be useful for Indonesian citizens,” said the Head of the BMKG Engineering Seismology Center Rahmat Triyono, in a statement.

This trial was held before Xiaomi decided to bring this feature to Indonesia. The EEW technology used was developed by the Institute of Care-Life in Chengdu, China, since 2008.

In 2019, ICL and BMKG from Indonesia collaborated to introduce this technology in Indonesia. This technology is presented with the hope of helping more Indonesian users to be able to receive early warnings and prevent loss of property and lives.
