Huawei, Samsung and Xiaomi continue to sell fewer devices due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The global smartphone market shrank by more than 20% in the second quarter. – results from the reports of analytical companies.
Global smartphone sales dropped by 75.6 million devices in the second quarter of this year compared to the second quarter of 2019. Samsung – the current leader among manufacturers – has been outclassed, and Huawei took the leading position. The Chinese company has more than 1/5 of the smartphone market, according to a study by IDC.
Who sold the most smartphones?
Huawei overtook Samsung in the number of devices sold in the second quarter of this year. The Chinese manufacturer currently occupies 1/5 of the entire smartphone market in the world. In Q2, it sold 55.8 million phones, nearly 3 million less than in the second quarter of last year. Huawei increased the number of smartphones sold also compared to the previous quarter by more than 6 million devices, according to an IDC study.

The biggest drop in sales was recorded Samsung – from 76.3 million units in Q2 2019 to 54.7 million devices in Q2 2020. The Korean manufacturer occupies nearly 1/5 of the smartphone market in the world. Compared to the current leader, Huaweiem, Samsung has sold about 1 million devices less, according to the IDC analysis.
Apple is in the black
The American company was the only one to record a small one sales increase by approx. 400 thousand smartphones in the second quarter of this year compared to last year’s result. In Q2 2020, Apple sold 37.6 million iPhones and was in the third place among the largest manufacturers on the mobile device market.

Comparing the report prepared by IDC with the Canalys analysis, we can see that the leaders of the ranking are in the same composition. In total, the three largest players – Huawei, Samsung and Apple – account for over 50 percent. the entire smartphone market.
Xiaomi, OPPO and other manufacturers also recorded a decrease in sales compared to the second quarter of 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the consumption behavior of people around the world. Due to the uncertain situation, incl. in the labor market, people are more prudent in making new expenses and buying less products.
