Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Smartphone: Review, Specs, and Safety Concerns

Redmi Note 5 it is quite a successful smartphone of the company Xiaomi, which I had the opportunity to take a closer look at in 2018. At that time, I praised this device for its attractive price, high quality, good equipment and decent performance. There were also a few shortcomings in it, but then you could turn a blind eye to them.

Redmi Note 5 could not withstand charging

Dawid wrote to TELEPOLIS.PL today. In his correspondence, he informed us that on Sunday (June 4, 2023) My daughter exploded while charging Redmi Note 5.

The incident took place on Sunday evening, when Mr. Dawid’s daughter was in the room. Her phone is charging he was lying on the ground i It was plugged into a power strip with a USB charging port. As Mr. Dawid explains, the strip was there used for charging for about 2 years and no problems so far i works to this day. After the whole incident, Mr. Dawid verified the voltage in the USB port with a meter, receiving the resulting specification 5 V. There is not much left of the smartphone itself, as you can see in the photos I received from Mr. Dawid.

Luckily, no one was hurt during the incident.

Apart from the smoke and slightly burnt floor, there were no other losses – the incident took place in the evening when the daughter was in the room.

It has long been known that lithium-ion batteries are not the safest. Just remember the fiery hot model Samsung Galaxy Note 7, where battery issues led to the complete recall of this product. From time to time we also hear about the “explosion” or ignition of smartphone representatives of other brands, in addition not only while charging.

Be careful how and when you charge your phone!

In this particular case, it is difficult to judge without a thorough analysis what was the cause of the whole incident. Was it any problem in the Xiaomi product itselfwhich could have revealed itself in such a spectacular way, or was it created at all temporary problem with the power strip (during the incident, the smartphone was not connected to the original charger). The Redmi Note 5 mentioned above comes from the official Polish distribution – it was bought in T-Mobile.

The phone comes from a Polish source (T-Mobile). I don’t think there’s anything to get upset about when your phone explodes – it happens the same way as with electric vehicles. It would be better to publicize various types of battery explosions in the media in order to sensitize people, e.g. before charging the phone at night, in the absence of household members, not to charge devices in flammable places, etc. Personally, I am an electronics engineer by education, I work in the telecommunications industry and I have an idea about batteries and reasons why these types of batteries can explode. This situation made me more sensitive to the possible danger, because it was the first time I personally encountered such a situation.
