For the first time in history, Xiaomi has reached the rank of second-largest smartphone maker in the world. According to data from consultancy Canalys, the Chinese manufacturer ended the second quarter with a 17% share of the global market – Apple lagged behind, with a share of 14%. At the top of the ranking is Samsung, with 19%.
sales of Xiaomi grew 83% in the quarter, compared to the same period in 2020 – the Chinese has increased its share mainly in Western Europe, Africa and Latin America. Samsung increased sales by 15% and Apple grew by just 1%.
According to Canalys, overall, global smartphone sales increased 12% in the last quarter.
Part of the growth of some manufacturers, including Xiaomi, is attributed to the weakening of Huawei, which has been affected by sanctions imposed by the United States. The Chinese manufacturer reached the place of second largest manufacturer in the world in 2019, but now does not even appear in the top five in the ranking.
