Xiaomi Overtakes Apple in the World Smartphone Sales Market

JAKARTA – As the world pandemic is getting under control in several countries, global smartphone shipments have increased by up to 12% in the second quarter of 2021 (April-June).

Interestingly, in the data released by Canalys, this increase was also accompanied by the success of Xiaomi overtaking Apple. This is the first time in the history of the world’s smartphone sales market.

Xiaomi has succeeded in overtaking Apple, and is in second place in smartphone shipments in the global market, with a shipment share of up to 17%, in the second quarter of 2021. This figure surpasses Apple which is only able to control 14% in the world market today.

Despite successfully overtaking Apple, Xiaomi still lags behind the South Korean manufacturer, Samsung, which is still in first place with a percentage of 19%.

However, when it comes to annual growth, Xiaomi is far able to outperform both Apple and Samsung. According to data also sourced from the Canalys report, the Chinese manufacturer was able to record an extraordinary annual growth of 83%.

In comparison, Samsung was only able to record an annual growth of 15% and Apple slumped at 1%. Compared to the two, other Chinese manufacturers, Oppo and Vivo, recorded higher annual growth. Where Oppo made a 28% increase, and Vivo was slightly below it in the 27% figure.

Canalys Research Manager, Ben Stanton said, Xiaomi’s success in growing tremendously to overtake Apple in the second quarter of 2021, cannot be separated from their sales abroad, especially in regions such as Western Europe which rose by 50%, Africa by 150%, and Latin America. which reaches 300%.

But all of these increases are still largely skewed towards the mass market. Sales of smartphone products whose prices are still around 40% and 75% below the selling price of Samsung and Apple products.

So it is believed by Ben Stanton, in the future Xiaomi will focus more on increasing their sales in various high-end level products, in order to also increase their income.

“So, Xiaomi’s main priority this year is to increase sales of high-end devices, such as the Mi 11 Ultra. But it will be a tough battle, against Oppo and Vivo who also have the same goal,” explained Ben Stanton.
