Xiaomi overtakes Apple as the world’s second largest phone maker

Despite record year Apple looks set to drop one step in the second quarter of this year, at least for mobile phones. In a preliminary report from analysis firm Canalys a new calculation of market shares per manufacturer worldwide is carried out, where Xiaomi pushes past and takes second place for the first time.

Xiaomi var notch in the heel already the first quarter of the year, where Apple held the second place with 15 percent of the market and Xiaomi a third place with 14 percent. Now the roles have changed and Xiaomi is squeezing 17 percent while Apple is dropping to 14 percent. The analysis company attributes the overtaking to real growth for Xiaomi’s part, especially internationally. The company’s deliveries to Latin America are estimated to have increased by more than 300 percent and they are also increasing significantly in Africa and Western Europe.

Samsung tops the list both now and last quarter, but Xiaomi is not far behind. Chinese Oppo and Vivo are in fourth and fifth place. According to Canalys, a large part of the growth consists of telephones in the budget and middle segment, where Huawei previously held market shares before their telephone business collapsed as a result of US trade blockades.

Although Apple has an iPhone SE that ranks in the middle class, according to Canalys, Xiaomi’s models cut price tags that are 45-75 percent lower than the equivalent from Apple and Samsung. In addition, the Iphone 12 Mini got a relative cool reception which can be a contributing factor. However, the figures are preliminary and may change until the report is completed.
