Xiaomi held a “mega” press conference yesterday, unveiling many new Mi 11 smartphones and several other products. The speculated flexible smartphone of the Mi Mix family did not happen, but it does not have to bother us; it was introduced a short time ago.
Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold: 8 “display packed for travel
Forget the old, double-flexible concept that Xiaomi had shown in previous years. The just introduced Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold was inspired mainly by the Samsung family Galaxy Fold, so you can look forward to a giant phone with a flexible display inside and a regular display outside. Due to this construction, the closed Mi Mix Fold looks like two phones stacked on top of each other; the thickness in this case is 17.2 mm.
The phone will be available in two variants – standard and ceramic. The former has a body covered with Gorilla Glass 5 with a ceramic texture, the latter has a ceramic back and a “gold” frame. The glass model weighs 317 grams, while the ceramic model weighs 332 grams; so it’s definitely not a crumb.

The outside is covered by a classic 6.5 “AMOLED display with a resolution of 840 × 2,520 pixels, a refresh rate of 90 Hz and a maximum brightness of 650 nits. The frames around the panel are relatively wide, in addition, it is disturbed by the cutout for a 20Mpx selfie camera in the upper right corner.
The bigger chart takes place after opening the phone. It is filled with an 8.01 “AMOLED display with WQHD + resolution (1,860 × 2,480 pixels), a maximum brightness of 900 nits and HDR10 + support. The refresh rate of the panel is only basic 60 Hz, finger touches are recognized twice as fast.

For the first time with a liquid lens
In addition to the selfie camera, you will find three other cameras with the following configuration on the Mi Mix Fold:
- Basic 108Mpx sensor with seven optical elements with an aperture of f / 1.75
- Wide-angle camera with a resolution of 13 Mpx, an angle of view of 123 ° and an aperture of f / 2.3
- Special 8Mpx telemacro camera that provides 3 × optical zoom (up to 30 × digital) and is able to focus from 3 cm
We will stop at the last camera a little longer, because its lens is very unique. It is a special lens, which consists of a transparent film filled with liquid. By the action of electrical impulses, this lens can change shape, which Xiaomi uses to focus at different distances at lightning speed; thanks to this, it captures both sharp images in the distance and very close objects. There is no need to be afraid of extreme temperatures; the lens should work reliably in the temperature range -40 to + 60 ° C.
The camera is powered by a special Surge C1 ISP chip of its own production, in addition to universal use for photos, you can also look forward to recording 8K video at 30 fps.
Under the baton of Snapdragon 888
Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold is, of course, the flagship smartphone, so we can find the Qualcomm chipset in its bowels Snapdragon 888which brings not only high performance but also support for modern networks 5G, Wi-Fi 6 or Bluetooth 5.2. NFC is also present, and there is even an infrared port. The chipset is cooled by a special cooling system of a “butterfly” shape, which combines a large evaporator chamber, thermal gel and several layers of graphite plates. The total area for heat dissipation should be 22,583 mm2, while not only the chip set is cooled, but also the heat from the 5G antennas and the charging system.
The Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold is integrated with a dual battery with a total capacity of 5,020 mAh, which can be recharged with a power of up to 67 watts; a full charge takes 37 minutes. Only wired charging via USB-C and QC4 + and PD 3.0 standards is supported, wireless charging is missing. You won’t even find a headphone jack or memory card slot on the body of the phone, you have to make do with basic 256 or 512GB of memory combined with 12 or 16 GB of RAM.

Xiaomi boasts above-standard sound quality, which is provided by four speakers tuned by Harman Kardon. These speakers and a 1.34 cc sound cavity are designed to deliver a 3D sound experience.
Mi Mix Fold is powered by the operating system Android 11 with the MIUI 12 superstructure, which is enriched with several specialties for the flexible display; eg desktop mode.

Price and availability
Unlike the previous Mi Mix Alpha, the Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold will go into regular sales, which will start in China on April 16. Prices are as follows:
- Variant 12/256 GB comes to 9,999 CNY (about 34 thousand crowns without VAT)
- The 12/512 GB variant costs 10,999 CNY (about 37,400 crowns without VAT)
- The special edition 16/512 GB with ceramic back will cost 12,999 CNY (about 44,200 crowns without VAT)
