The Chinese mega-company Xiaomi has started remotely blocking smartphones in several countries that fall under US sanctions. The problems affect devices in Cuba, Iran, Syria, Sudan, North Korea and Crimea.
XDA Developers forum users confirm that those devices that are activated in restricted areas are blocked. Phones with unofficial software or activated before the restrictions are not blocked.
However, Russia’s Rospotrebnadzor said no complaints had been received in Crimea. Authorities on the peninsula will address the issue, the Russians said.
