Xiaomi HyperOS: Bootloader Restrictions and Security Measures Explained

Xiaomi officially announced that its newest UI, HyperOS, a replacement for MIUI, will be launched globally for a number of devices such as the Xiaomi 13, Xiaomi 12, and others starting in early 2024. However, it was recently revealed that devices with an unlocked bootloader will not receive an upgrade from MIUI to HyperOS via OTA. .

Not only that, devices that already use HyperOS will also have to go through a more complicated process if they want to unlock the system. For those who may not know, bootloader unlock status is required when users want to update their device, such as installing a custom ROM.

The option to unlock bootloader in HyperOS is turned off by default. Users must ask for “permission” first via the Xiaomi Community forum if they want to get this access. However, it seems that the process that must be followed by global users will only be revealed when HyperOS is officially released later.

For the Chinese version itself, where HyperOS has been officially launched, users have to go through a more complicated process. They have to reach “Level 5” in the forum, and not only that, the bootloader unlock quota is also limited to only three times per year. However, it is not yet known whether the same scheme will be applied to global users.

Xiaomi Wants HyperOS to Be More Secure

In his testimony to Android Authority, Xiaomi explained that the policy was implemented to protect security, prevent data leaks, and provide users with a more secure and stable experience. Hence, Xiaomi turned it off in Hyper OS and did not provide that option to users.

Unlock MIUI 14 bootloader

MIUI 14 and previous generations, and perhaps almost all Android UIs today, have locked the system by default but Xiaomi still provides the option to unlock it. Through developer options, users can unlock the bootloader after giving permission and agreeing to the warning.

Apart from that, unlocking the bootlader is actually not recommended as explained by Xiaomi earlier. However, for users who like changing custom ROMs or tweaking their Xiaomi devices, they will have to go through extra steps to do so in the future.
