KOMPAS.com – Vendor smartphone China Xiaomi reportedly is preparing to expand its business to the industry electric car or electronic vehicle (EV).
According to three anonymous sources close to the issue, Xiaomi will produce electric cars under its own brand. For the manufacturing process, Xiaomi is reportedly partnering with a Chinese automotive company, Great Wall Motor.
According to one source, the partnership between Xiaomi and Great Wall will be announced as early as next week.
Neither the Xiaomi nor the Great Wall have confirmed this news, as compiled KompasTekno from Reuters, Saturday (27/3/2021).
Electric car Xiaomi, which will be a competitor for Tesla, is rumored to be launched around 2023. Later, this electric car can connect with other devices in the Xiaomi product ecosystem.
One source said that Xiaomi founder and CEO Lei Jun believes that his company’s expertise in hardware manufacturing will help accelerate the design and production of its electric cars.
As is well known, in addition to smartphones, Xiaomi has also launched various products that can connect to the internet, including scooters, air purifiers, and rice cookers.

With the release of Xiaomi’s plan, it also adds to the length of the line of technology companies that claim to enter the electric car market.
In January, Chinese search engine company Baidu also said it would produce electric cars in collaboration with automotive company Geely.
Xiaomi is also not the only smartphone vendor with the ambition to expand its business to the automotive world. Apple previously known to be planning to release its own autonomous car in 2024.
The rumors regarding the development of Apple’s autonomous cars have actually been heard for a long time. The initial initiation of this project, called Project Titan, began in 2014. Today the industry calls the autonomous car the Apple Car, although the name is not yet official.
