Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Xiaomi founder and chairman Lei Jun has ambitious targets. He wants the company that was founded in 2010 to become the number one smartphone manufacturer in the world in the next three years.
This was conveyed in a speech celebrating his 11th birthday which took place on Tuesday (10/8/2021), as compiled from the Global Times, Friday (13/8/2021).
Lei Jun added that currently Xiaomi’s main task is to maintain its second position as the world’s largest vendor.
“The research company told me that this is the first time a Chinese company has achieved such a feat. For the first time in history, Chinese mobile phone products have taken the first position in developed markets such as Europe. Everyone is very happy to hear the good news and feel that reaching the position World No.1 is just at your fingertips,” Lei said.
According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, Xiaomi has a 25% market share in the European market and is ranked first in the second quarter of 2021. This position was taken from Samsung and Apple.
The report comes after another market research report released in July by Canalys which showed that Xiaomi overtook Apple in the second quarter of this year to become the world’s No.2 smartphone maker for the first time with a 17 percent share of worldwide smartphone shipments.
Despite the recent positive news, Lei Jun reminded Xiaomi not to underestimate the competitiveness of the world-class giant.
“Xiaomi is still a very young company, we have to be very calm in the face of competition, and continue to build solid foundations at a steady pace,” he said.
