Xiamen Sailors Sweep ILCA Asian Championships
The 2024 ILCA Asian (Open) Sailing Championships concluded in Haikou, China, with a resounding victory for Chinese sailors. Xiamen athletes, in particular, dominated the competition, earning an remarkable haul of medals.The five-day event, featuring ten intense rounds of racing, saw a total of nine gold medals claimed by Chinese competitors. The Xiamen team alone secured five golds,three silvers,and two bronzes,a testament to their remarkable skill and training.
The championships encompassed three classes: ILCA 7, ILCA 6, and ILCA 4. The ILCA 7 and ILCA 6 classes are Olympic events, while the ILCA 4 class, a youth division, also holds official Asian Games status. Xiamen’s success spanned all three classes, highlighting the depth of talent within their sailing program.
Notable individual achievements included Zheng Weijie’s gold medal in the men’s ILCA 6, Wu Hongwei’s victory in the men’s ILCA 4 U18, and Yan Guoguo’s triumph in the women’s ILCA 4 U16. Further contributing to Xiamen’s medal count were Huang Zeen’s silver in the men’s ILCA 7 U21, Liu Jiahua’s silver in the men’s ILCA 6, Huang Lifei’s bronze in the women’s ILCA 6 U19, and Zhuang Jiahao’s bronze in the men’s ILCA 4 U16. zheng Weijie and Wu Hongwei also secured open category wins in their respective classes, with Liu Jiahua adding another open category silver to the team’s total.
The championships provided valuable training for the Chinese national sailing and windsurfing team, currently engaged in winter training in readiness for the upcoming Nagoya Asian Games and the Los Angeles Olympics. The Haikou venue offered ideal conditions,with winds ranging from light breezes to gusts reaching 25 knots,providing a challenging yet beneficial training environment for the athletes. The competition successfully completed all ten planned rounds.
This year’s Asian Championships attracted a record-breaking 259 participants from 18 countries and regions,including competitors from Germany,France,Bulgaria,the Netherlands,and Australia. This international participation considerably elevated the competition’s overall standard. French competitor Marie commented on the experience, stating, “Qingdao, china will host the World Championships next year, so I want to experience it in China. I am very happy to come to a new place to compete. The organizing committee has provided very good training conditions and competition venues, and the organization of the event is also very good.”
Adding to the event’s prestige, 15 of the coaches and athletes present in Haikou had previously competed in the olympic Games. These experienced sailors participated in a “Sailors Night” ceremony, exchanging commemorative trophies and sharing encouragement with the younger generation of sailors.
