1998: Party leader Jiang Zemin, China’s most powerful man, visits Hubei province after a flash flood claimed at least 2,000 lives.

2010: Jiang’s successor, Hu Jintao, visits Qinghai province after an earthquake kills at least 1,500.

August 2023: Large areas around the capital Beijing are hit by floods after the worst rain in 144 years.

At least 109 people have died and almost 500,000 homes have been destroyed by the floodwaters.

Two weeks later, Party leader Xi Jinping has not visited the flood areas. The last photo of him is this, taken on July 31.

State media praise Xi Jinping’s leadership in the rescue efforts after the catastrophic flood. In social media, people are wondering where the dictator has gone.

While extreme weather Hans ravaged Norway at the beginning of August, parts of northern China were hit by heavy rain and flash floods. Typhoons Doksuri and Kanu have caused floods and landslides. So far, the storm has claimed at least 109 lives and forced one and a half million people from their homes.

In the city of Zhuozhou, just south-west of the capital Beijing, the flood was up to 7 meters high. Some of it was due to the forces of nature. Some of it was man-made.
