President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping

Ladies and gentlemen, friends:

Today, everyone gathers together to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and France. On behalf of the Chinese government and people, I would like to extend my sincere greetings to the great French people, and express my heartfelt thanks to people from all walks of life who are committed to China-France friendship!

The establishment of diplomatic relations between China and France 60 years ago was a major event in the history of international relations. With their extraordinary wisdom and courage, Chairman Mao Zedong and General de Gaulle built a bridge of friendship between China and France, opened the door to exchanges and cooperation between China and the West, and brought hope to the world in the midst of the Cold War.

Over the past 60 years, China-France relations have always been at the forefront of China’s relations with Western countries, bringing benefits to the people of both countries and contributing to world peace, stability and development. From aircraft, satellites, and nuclear power plants to wine, cheese, and cosmetics, Sino-French cooperation is both “high-tech” and “down-to-earth”; from mutual establishment of cultural centers to mutual hosting of cultural years and language years, Sino-French people-to-people and cultural exchanges have The world has set an example for mutual learning among civilizations; from the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris to the Kunming-Montreal Biodiversity Conference, China and France have joined hands to lead the international community in jointly responding to global challenges.

The unique history of Sino-French relations has created a unique “Sino-French spirit.” When I visited France 10 years ago, I summarized it as “independence, mutual understanding, foresight, and mutual benefit.” In today’s world, this spirit is even more precious. Facing the ups and downs of the new era, China and France should uphold the original intention of establishing diplomatic relations, actively face the future, and dare to make a difference.

We must adhere to independence, proceed from the fundamental and long-term interests of the two countries, unswervingly develop bilateral relations, and respond to the uncertainty of the world with the stability of China-France relations.

We must adhere to mutual understanding and take the 2024 China-France Year of Culture and Tourism and the Paris Olympics as opportunities to expand people-to-people and cultural exchanges and promote people-to-people bonds. China has implemented a 15-day visa-free entry policy for France, and welcomes more French friends to come to China for “free travel” to appreciate China’s famous mountains and rivers, small bridges and flowing water, the solitary smoke in the desert, appreciate cultural miracles such as the Great Wall and the Terracotta Warriors, and appreciate today’s China development and changes, and appreciate the spiritual outlook of the Chinese people.

We must persist in being far-sighted, keep the well-being of mankind in mind, follow the general trend of history, jointly advocate an equal and orderly world multipolarization, and economic globalization that benefits all and inclusiveness, and continue to make China-France contributions to maintaining world peace and stability and responding to global challenges.

We must adhere to mutual benefit and win-win results. While deepening traditional cooperation, we must actively tap the cooperation potential in emerging fields such as green industry and clean energy, and insist on making the cake bigger. Openness is the only way to prosperity. China is willing to work with France to pool cooperation forces through openness and share development opportunities through openness.

I firmly believe that facing the next 60 years, China and France will work together to create greater glory!
