Details: Xi Jinping’s intention to visit Russia next week was reported to Reuters by people familiar with the matter.
Plans for the visit came amid China’s offer to mediate peace in Ukraine, which was met with skepticism in the West, given China’s diplomatic support for Russia.
Background:
- On February 24, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs published the so-called “peace plan” with its ideas for resolving Russia’s war against Ukraine, which includes respect for the sovereignty of all countries, abandoning the “cold war mentality” and cessation of hostilities.
- In December 2022, Putin said he would like to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping in the spring of 2023 in Moscow.
