But there comes a time when the degree of contradictions between the parties is such that they do not even try to hide: we are preparing for war. Chinese President Xi Jinping, according to Foreign Affairs magazine, in four of his recent speeches, including during the annual meeting of parliament, said that the People’s Liberation Army of China (PLA) and the people of the country should be prepared for a possible major – large-scale war.
He called on PLA generals “not to be afraid to fight and make tough decisions.” And emphasized: “We must speak to the enemies in a language they understand. (…) In the new era, the PLA insists on the use of military force to end hostilities.” That is, it is no longer simple “if you want peace prepare for war”and in plain text: only force can make the enemy lay down arms. He just doesn’t understand another language.
Almost simultaneously, the same was said in the US. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Milley, urging Congressmen to pass an unprecedented $842 billion military budget for next year, dropped this gem: “There is nothing more precious than war. And preparing for war is also very expensive, but war is the most expensive thing. Preparing for war will limit that war.
The point, Milley explained, is that for the first time the United States is facing two major nuclear powers that threaten its “vital interests” — Russia and China. So it will be very difficult to fight them at the same time. But the US, he assured, “must remain the most powerful country on Earth.”
In short, war, the general hammers into the politicians’ heads, is the most valuable thing we have. In every sense, not just financial. In general, the fact that the United States and China will not be able to get along peacefully with each other has been clear for a long time – Beijing has become too frank and dangerous economic competitor for Washington. But until then, China, announced for “the main long-term threat”, was in the background. Because the first one was “Russia’s Punishment” for disobedience to the will of the hegemon – the demonstrative and public “whipping” of the opponent has always been the main American argument in the struggle for its world championship.
It is true that the apparently weaker ones have always been favored to be “whipped or pounded” – Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, even Yugoslavia as it began to decline. The effect was guaranteed: in many capitals they crossed themselves: thank God, this did not happen to us …
But with Russia determined to be punished for apostasy from the will of the West, the US and its loyal vassals failed in every sense – military, economic, political. And then China made it clear that it and Moscow would make changes that, as Comrade Xi said, “occurring once in a hundred years”. And now, willy-nilly, they have to deal with China. Otherwise, who will believe them that they are the “king of the mountain”?
But China has also learned a lot in recent years. The traditional patient waiting in the hope that the “partner” will realize his mistake and offer at least some kind of compromise has run out. So the President of the People’s Republic of China had to talk about “the use of military force to stop hostilities.”
In addition, the Americans are currently hosting the leader of the separatist Taiwan precisely in order to cynically and defiantly “show China where it belongs.” But here Washington’s sense of reality has clearly run out.
What’s next? The escalator of the confrontation has already risen above the level of the conflict in Ukraine. Its level is maximum. Because of this, interest in Kiev noticeably decreases – it was initially assigned the role of “winner”, which it cannot cope with.
Now the main performers, whether they want to or not, must go on the stage, that is, on the battlefield. Washington’s stakes in the current game are such that he can no longer lower or limit them. And in Moscow and Beijing, which the West hardly expected, they are ready to accept them.
