Xi Jinping Issues Chinese Hard Warning to US

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

President China Xi Jinping issued a sharp warning about Beijing’s military determination that was likely aimed at United States of America.

This was conveyed by Xi in a speech on the 70th anniversary of China’s entry into the Korean War, Friday (23/10).

Xi emphasized patriotism, his speech colored by the heroic anecdotes of the Chinese troops. He said the victory in the 1950-1953 conflict was a reminder that his nation was ready to fight anyone who created trouble with China.

Reported AFPBeijing often uses war warnings to give the United States a thin warning of a “new China” military might.

In recent years, President Donald Trump has been embroiled in bitter disputes with China that include trade, technology, human rights, and Taiwanese status.

“The Chinese people don’t cause trouble, nor are we afraid of them,” Xi said to applause.

“We will never sit idly by and witness any damage to our national sovereignty and we will never allow any force to attack or divide the sacred territories of the country,” he said.

The Korean War was the main foundation narrative for the ruling Communist Party.

So far, the war is the only war that brings Chinese and US forces together on a large-scale battle.

According to the Chinese government, more than 197,000 Chinese soldiers died in the three-year war.

With tensions escalating between Beijing and Washington, China is commemorating 70 years of the war for domestic consumption as well as a warning to the US.

Over the past week, Chinese state media have launched a wave of propaganda by conducting daily interviews with veterans who survived the war.

“This should be seen as a message aimed directly at the United States, there is no ambiguity here. Xi is using the spirit of war in a broad sense,” said Alice Ekman, an analyst specializing in China at the European Union Institute of Security Studies.

In the past two years, China and North Korea have worked to improve relations after previously deteriorating when Beijing supported a series of United Nations (UN) sanctions against Pyongyang for its nuclear activities.

Xi and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un have met five times since March 2018, even as nuclear negotiations between Washington and Pyongyang stalled.

“By commemorating the anniversary, China is declaring to the US that in the past they were not afraid of the US and now (they) are still not afraid of the US. That is to prepare for a possible limited military conflict with the US,” said Shi Yinhong, Professor of International Politics at Renmin. University.
