Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The government of Chinese President Xi Jinping suddenly criticized the government of Russian President Vladimir Putin. An official statement was even given by Beijing’s representatives in Moscow.

The Chinese Embassy was reportedly angered by what it called the “brutal handling” by the Russian authorities. This is related to the denial of entry of some Chinese citizens to the country.

Russia’s brutal and excessive law enforcement activities in this incident have seriously violated the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese citizens,” the embassy stressed in a post over the weekend on WeChat, a popular Chinese social media outlet. Strait Times collect Bloomberg and also The ExpressTuesday (8/8/2023).

The incident began when five Chinese citizens attempted to enter Russia on July 29. They were then examined at a checkpoint on the Russia-Kazakhstan border.

But the embassy said they were checked repeatedly and even interrogated for up to four hours. Not only were they denied entry, their visas were also revoked.

The Chinese embassy also said it had made statements to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Federal Security Bureau and the Federal Border Guard Service. Video reviews were also provided by people involved in the incident.

This criticism is a rare thing that China does to Russia. Previously in 2022, the two countries through their presidents announced “friendship without borders”.

Xi Jinping and Putin agreed there was no “no-go zone” for the two countries. China has also distinguished itself as a figure that rejects Western sanctions on Russia’s war in Ukraine.

“This goes against the big picture of China-Russia friendship and the growing trend of friendly people-to-people exchanges between the two countries,” China added.

“Demand an explanation of the cause of the incident, take active measures to eliminate the bad influence, and ensure that similar incidents will not be repeated in the future,” the embassy said.

Russia needs to carry out further investigations into the border guard’s excessive law enforcement activities and give the Chinese side a satisfactory answer,” the Chinese representative said.
