Xi Jinping and Joe Biden hold phone call

Beijing. The presidents of China, Xi Jinping, and the United States, Joe Biden, spoke by telephone this Wednesday about different topics in common, such as the relationship between both countries, the elections in Taiwan, the war in Ukraine and their technological rivalry, while maintaining their first direct conversation since they met last November, in San Francisco, California.

Xi urged Biden in the one hour and 45 minute conversation for both nations to adhere to the general principles of peace, stability and credibility as main relationship goals for this year. “The two sides must fulfill their mutual commitments with actions and turn the vision of San Francisco into reality,” commented the Asian leader, quoted by the Xinhua agency.

Biden noted that the link between Washington and Beijing “is the most important relationship in the world. “The progress in the relationship since the San Francisco meeting demonstrates that the two sides can promote cooperation while responsibly managing differences,” the agency detailed.

Regarding Taiwan, Xi told Biden that it is an issue of “insurmountable red line” for China, for which he assured: “We will not allow separatist activities or external interference that support the forces of ‘independence’ to go unchecked.” , after elections were held on the island last May.

The US president reiterated his “one China” policy, but “underlined the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait,” after the recent deployments of Beijing’s military forces near Taipei, the House said. White, noted the Reuters agency.

In the call he also discussed with Xi his relationship with Russia over the invasion of Ukraine, given that the Asian giant has shown a position of non-interference and calls for negotiations.

The two leaders discussed U.S. efforts to prevent certain U.S. technologies, including advanced semiconductors, from being exported to China.

Xi warned that the US government “is not eliminating risks but creating risks” by suppressing his country’s commercial and technological development and adding new entities to sanctions lists.

Biden assured that his administration “will continue to take necessary steps to prevent advanced American technologies from being used to undermine our national security, without unduly limiting trade and investment,” according to the White House.

White House Security Council spokesman John Kirby said Biden addressed U.S. concerns about the popular social media app TikTok, which faces proposed U.S. legislation that would force its Chinese owner ByteDance to divest over concerns about data security.

This talk is the preamble to a series of high-level meetings that officials from both governments will have in China, which will begin these days with the appearance of the Secretary of the Treasury, Janet Yellen, and the Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, in the next weeks.
