Chinese President Xi Jinping highlighted on Tuesday three fundamental principles that should guide relations between China and the United States in 2024, during his telephone conversation with US President Joe Biden.

First of all, peace should be valued, he said, adding that the two sides should lay a foundation of non-conflict and non-confrontation underpinning relations and continue to reinforce the positive outlook of relations.

Secondly, priority must be given to stability, he said.

Both sides should refrain from pushing back relations, provoking incidents or crossing the line, for the sake of maintaining the overall stability of relations, he said.

Third, credibility must be maintained, Xi said, noting that the two sides must fulfill their commitments to each other through actions and turn the “San Francisco Vision” into reality.

Both sides need to strengthen dialogue in a mutually respectful manner, manage differences prudently, promote cooperation in a spirit of mutual benefit, and step up coordination on international affairs in a responsible manner, he added.

Strategic perception is essential

Chinese President Xi Jinping also expressed that the issue of strategic perception is always fundamental to relations between China and the United States, like the first button on a shirt that must be put on correctly.

In his telephone conversation with US President Joe Biden, Xi said that two major countries like China and the United States should not cut ties or turn their backs on each other, let alone fall into conflict or confrontation.

The two countries should respect each other, coexist in peace and seek mutually beneficial cooperation, he noted, adding that the relationship should continue to advance in a stable, healthy and sustainable manner, instead of going backwards.
