Brazilian coach Tite will leave his post after the 2022 World Cup scheduled for the end of the year in Qatar, where the five-time world champions are among the favorites, he announced on Friday.
“I’m not going to lie, I’m going to stay until the end of the World Cup,” the 60-year-old coach revealed in a surprise announcement during an interview with the Brazilian channel Sportv.
“I am very focused on my job. I know that football is made of cycles and I had a unique opportunity to find myself in this position, when many other top professionals also had the capacity”, he added.
Adenor Leonardo Bachi, better known by his nickname “Tite”, took the reins of the Seleçao in 2016, after the dismissal of Dunga, following the fiasco of elimination in the first round of the Copa América du Centenaire, in the United States .
Under his leadership, Neymar and company qualified with flying colors for the 2018 World Cup. Before his arrival, however, they were poorly embarked on the South American playoffs, in sixth position, for four places and another as a play-off.
Arrived favorites in Russia, the Brazilians however could not win the sixth star expected by all countries since 2002: they were eliminated by Belgium (1-2) in the quarter-finals.
Freshly recovered from injury, Neymar was only a shadow of himself during this World Cup and was mocked for his theatrical falls almost at every contact. And it was without Neymar, still injured, that Tite won his first (and only) title at the head of the Seleçao, the Copa América played at home in 2019.
For the 2022 World Cup, Brazil dominated the qualifiers, securing their qualification five days from the end.
But Tite is regularly criticized by supporters for his game sometimes considered too defensive, the selection having accustomed its fans to playing dazzling football with legends like Pelé or Ronaldinho.
When he arrived at the helm of the Seleçao, Tite was crowned with his excellent results with the Corinthians of Sao Paulo, who with him won the Club World Cup in 2012 as well as the Brazilian championship in 2011 and 2015.
