The announcement of his death was made this Wednesday, April 20, 2022, by La Tanière zoo-refuge. The female tiger Xena closed her eyes a few days before she turned 14 on April 5.
Xena suffered from “severe kidney failure which significantly reduced her quality of life”, announces the establishment which rescues animals and offers them a better life near Chartres.
La Tanière did everything to save the tigress
The condition of this Panthera tigris had seriously deteriorated since the beginning of March, and even if the healers offered him all the good care and treatment possible, La Tanière decided to put an end to his suffering.
“Apathetic, she hardly ate any more and responded less and less to the requests and attentions of her keepers who watched over her day and night”, describes the zoo-refuge of Nogent le Phaye in a social media post.
Xena had found a peaceful setting in the heart of Beauce, she had been found, along with Isabella, another tigress, abandoned in a “cage truck” in Portugal.

Thin and very nervous when she arrived, she had quickly regained her strength and quickly calmed down thanks to the good care of the animal teams.
Since June 2019, Xena had been particularly followed by the healers of La Tanière who had discovered her kidney failure.
And like sisters, Xena and Isabella looked out for each other, even though they didn’t share the same enclosure in the zoo-sanctuary.
