John Linneman, pen of Eurogamer and Digital Foundry, has started a rather controversial discussion on Twitter, focused on a limit that the new Xbox Series X|S would have. According to his experience, in fact, the new Microsoft consoles, without internet, they are gods fermacarte. And for this reason they should be changed.
According to some of the people involved in the discussion, Microsoft would have silently introduced those limitations that had caused so much hype at the time of Xbox One: namely thealways online. In reality it shouldn’t be exactly like that, as games are supposed to start, but Microsoft’s way of choosing, for many, is still rather uncomfortable. One of them is Linneman. The colleague, in fact, complains that the new Xboxes need an online connection to be able to configure themselves correctly. Without internet it is not possible to complete the first start. Even to format the internal SSD, however, you need the internet, something that makes it more difficult to resell the console or repair it. A boring thing in 2021, which could become a real limitation in a few years, when the Xbox Series X | S servers are taken offline.
Linneman is also an enthusiast retrogamer and it is already foreseen the many problems that could arise in several years if he wants to fiddle with the Xbox Series X | S as he does today with the NES or the MegaDrive. As we said, this choice will also make repairs more complex, but above all it creates difficulties for all those who for one reason or another do not have a reliable connection at hand with which to configure the newly purchased Xbox.
He also believes that the advantage of physical media would be lost, which makes Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S two “paperweights” in case you don’t have a connection. “The problem here is that Xboxes are gods fermacarte without the Internet. THEY WILL NOT WORK. It is not possible to purchase a new system and use it without a connection. This is something that should change. That’s all, “wrote Linneman.
