Microsoft wants to automatically add HDR support to older games that originally didn’t have them when played on the upcoming Xbox Series X console. That makes the company Thursday in one blog post known.
The Xbox Series X directly plays games that previously appeared on other Xbox consoles. The games that appeared almost twenty years ago are also equipped with HDR support. HDR stands for high dynamic range and simply means that those games get more contrasts and bright colors.
Microsoft doesn’t exactly describe how HDR is added to older games. A new technique is being used on the Xbox Series X, so that it does not cost extra work for developers.
The game console can also upgrade the number of images per second (expressed as fps) of older games. For example, “a number of titles” is scaled up from 30 fps to 60 fps. Games running at 60 fps can expect to double to 120 fps.
The Xbox Series X will be released around the holidays in the fall. In addition to more powerful hardware for better games, the new Xbox also gets a solid state drive (SSD) as memory, which allows games and levels to be loaded much faster.
