Xbox Series X and S consoles can now download updates in Energy Saver Mode

Microsoft makes this known in an update on Xbox’s sustainability goals, including the goal to become carbon negative and zero-waste by 2030.

The console update eliminates the need for users to use Standby mode to download updates while the console is not in use. Instead, there’s Energy Saver mode, which is about 20 times more energy efficient than Standy mode.

Energy Saver mode is now also a default for users starting up their Xbox console for the first time.

Microsoft also says it has equipped a small number of new consoles with an “advanced power monitoring system” to make measurements that can contribute to the energy efficiency of future consoles. The company also says it will increase its efforts to reuse recycled plastic from old consoles.
