Two years ago I wrote it was obvious that Microsoft would end Xbox Live Gold and instead bet everything on Game Passso we have been waiting a long time for this.
Because it seems that Windows Central made a mistake and published an article confirming that Xbox Live Gold will be converted into a new Game Pass tier called Xbox Game Pass Core on September 1st, before very quickly removing it, but not for cafe.naver.com managed to get hold of the information.
This won’t just be a name change, as Games with Gold will finally be discontinued as part of this. Instead, Xbox Game Pass Core subscribers will get access to a small selection of the games available with the regular/higher tiers of Game Pass. This collection starts with more than 25 games, including:
Games you’ve already acquired as part of Games with Gold will still be available as long as you have Xbox Game Pass Core, so it makes sense that existing Xbox Live Gold members would automatically convert to Core. It should come as no surprise, then, that the price remains the same and that Xbox Game Pass Core is required to play non-free-to-play multiplayer games.
We can expect to get an official confirmation and more details on this either later today or later this week, depending on whether Microsoft wants the Activision Blizzard King acquisition to get all the attention or not.
