Xbox Live, the network functionality of the entire Xbox platform, is changing its name. In the future, the program will be called Xbox network, Microsoft confirmed this week.
The name change was officially clarified on Monday, several months after the name “Xbox network” first began to appear. In another statement The Verge A spokesman for Microsoft said the idea was to avoid confusion with the Xbox Live Gold subscription service – which gives players access to network services and a handful of free games each month.
– Xbox network refers to the framework for Xbox network services, which was recently updated in the Microsoft Service Agreement. The purpose of the transition from Xbox Live to Xbox network is to separate the framework from the Xbox Live Gold subscription service.
Thus, it will no longer be Xbox Live you connect to play Xbox games online. The name has been around since Microsoft launched the network functionality in 2002, but after a little over 18 years, it’s over and out.
Xbox Live Gold changes on the way
The change follows Microsoft’s promise of one overhaul of the Xbox Live Gold service. Earlier this year, the company announced that subscriptions would go up in price, which was quickly reversed after fierce criticism from players.
Instead, Microsoft announced that the requirement for Xbox Live Gold membership for free games would disappear at some point. Thus, one will eventually no longer have to pay to play games like Fortnite online.
