Redfall launched as a console exclusive on PC and Xbox Series X/S earlier this week to negative reviews from critics and gamers alike. Now, Xbox head Phil Spencer has appeared at Kinda Funny Games to talk about Redfall, saying “there’s nothing harder for me than to disappoint the Xbox community.”
“I’m disappointed, I’m upset with myself,” Spencer added. The head of Xbox went on to talk about the reaction to the 30FPS announcement as a “chin punch” that they “rightfully” deserved for dropping the original promise of 60FPS gameplay.
“The critical response was not what we wanted,” Spencer continued. “The only thing I’m not going to do is hinder creative aspirations,” he added, saying he won’t use Redfall’s disappointing launch as an excuse to pressure developers who are passionate about making the games they want to make.
We will continue to work on the game. We have shown a commitment to games like Sea of Thieves and Grounded to continue developing games. But I also know that these games cost $70 and I will take full responsibility for launching a game that should be great.
While Redfall has been a disappointment for Spencer, at least players can rest assured that both Xbox and developer Arkane will stick with the game and keep improving it.
