Xbox CEO Phil Spencer Discusses Potential Acquisition of Nintendo: Microsoft’s Plan for Future Market Growth

The news continues to pour out from Tuesday’s big leak following the trial between Microsoft and the US competition authority FTC. Among the many documents made public by mistake was an email (via Polygon) where Xbox CEO Phil Spencer discussed the possibility of buying Nintendo.

In the June 2020 email, Spencer describes the Japanese Mario creator as the top target for Microsoft’s games division and a potential acquisition as a career highlight. At the time, he had already been in talks with the Nintendo board, but highlighted two major obstacles to a merger.

“Unfortunately (or fortunately for Nintendo), Nintendo is sitting on a pile of piles of cash and it has a board that until recently hasn’t pushed for further market growth,” Spencer said, later adding:

– At one point or another, getting hold of Nintendo would have been a career highlight, and I sincerely believe that it would have benefited both companies. It just takes a long time for Nintendo to realize that their future lies outside of their own hardware. Long time.

The Xbox manager further wrote that the Microsoft board had already given the thumbs up to pick up both Nintendo and Valve if the opportunity presented itself.

Later that year, Microsoft purchased Bethesda owner Zenimax. The American company is now working to get approval for a planned purchase of Activision Blizzard. It is clear that Nintendo was high on the wish list three years ago, but whether there is still life in those plans is uncertain.
