Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Pushes for Elimination of Call of Duty Exclusivity on Consoles

Xbox boss Phil Spencer no longer wants to see any form of exclusivity for the Call of Duty games on any console. The Microsoft CEO advocates 100% equality of all games on all platforms. Spencer also wants to get rid of temporarily exclusive features or skins.

Spencer announced the news via the official Xbox podcast. For example, the Xbox boss announced that temporary exclusivity of game features, as well as exclusive skins and modes, such as the ‘Play it first’ betas on PlayStation, will no longer take place now that the franchise is in the hands of Xbox.

Spencer does this not so much to take away the advantages for PlayStation gamers, but to equalize the experience on all platforms. For example, he wants ‘Call of Duty players on PlayStation and also on future Nintendo platforms to be 100% part of the community’. After all, it is not the intention that ‘players have the feeling that something is passing them by’.

The goal is to release future Call of Duty games with 100% consistency for both launch and post-launch content. Of course, performance will be impossible to match across platforms, but otherwise Spencer wants an identical experience.

Interestingly, he also says that it is ‘not the intention to have players buy more Xbox consoles via Call of Duty’. For example, Spencer only wants ‘the entire Call of Duty nation to feel supported on every platform’.

Nice words, but if you read between the lines, you will notice that the new policy only imposes a restriction on PlayStation. And with that, the biggest competitor has once again lost an advantage.

What do you think of the statement?
