Xavi Simons has been largely persuaded by Nasser Al-Khelaïfi to return to Paris Saint-Germain after a year at PSV, reports Le Parisien. The chairman of the Paris club largely left transfer matters to football advisor Luis Campos last summer. However, the transfer of Simons, who returned to the Parc des Princes for four million euros and is loaned to RB Leipzig this year, is largely due to Al-Khelaïfi.

The Qatari called Simons several times to ask if he wanted to return to the French capital. Al-Khelaïfi has also repeatedly urged the twenty-year-old attacking midfielder that he would do everything he could to ensure that Simons would develop in Paris. In other transfers, the club chairman played a supporting role. He also smoothed negotiations when conversations with Campos stalled.

Simons exchanged PSG for PSV on a free transfer last year and became the absolute trendsetter in Eindhoven. In total, the dribbler played 48 matches for the club, scoring 22 times and providing 12 assists. The five-time Dutch international has also started in Leipzig: in four games, Simons managed to score twice and provide three assists.

Earlier this week, Simons talked to Algemeen Dagblad about his choice for RB Leipzig. “Before AZ (last league match with PSV, ed.) There were already discussions with clubs, then through my agent. Later, many trainers call you themselves, they explain their project and say what they think of you. The Leipzig trainer ( Marco Rose, ed.) wanted me so badly, and I immediately liked the club’s project. After that conversation I knew enough and where I wanted to go.”
