Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez expressed, during a press conference, on Sunday, his belief that Real Madrid’s relinquishment of the Spanish league title in football is due to the wonderful season of the Catalan team.
Real Madrid, the defending champions, lost 3-2 at home to Villarreal on Saturday, and leaders Barcelona can widen the gap from their royal rivals to 15 points if they beat Girona on Monday.
Despite this big difference in points, Real Madrid’s loss came after it swept Barcelona 4-0 last week to reach the Spanish Cup final.
“I don’t know if they stopped working or not, but if they did, it’s thanks to us,” Xavi said.
He added, “Tomorrow it is important to increase the difference to 15 points. It will not mean that anything is guaranteed, but it will be an amazing difference. I do not care if Real Madrid do something or not, what matters to me is what we do.”
Real Madrid will play the Spanish Cup final against Osasuna, and will face Chelsea, Wednesday, in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals.
And Xavi added that he believes that Barcelona winning the league for the first time since 2019 will be a wonderful achievement that some are trying to “underestimate”.
He added, “Winning the Spanish league is amazing. Winning the league gives you stability.”
And he continued, “I remember (former Real Madrid coach Zinedine) Zidane, after winning the Champions League, saying that the goal was to win the Spanish League. It is underestimated that winning the league, for us, would be exceptional.”
