Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen is already historic after beating Fortuna Dusseldorf, thus equaling a record set by Real Madrid, who in the 2016-2017 season managed to play 40 games without losing.
The meringues achieved that streak with 31 wins and 9 losses, when they had Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema in their ranks. The streak ended on January 15 after losing 2-1 to Sevilla.
In addition, the German team also equaled Inter Milan’s unbeaten streak from the 2004-2005 season. The Nerazzurri lost that streak after losing 0-1 to Milan on February 27, 2005.
Bayer Leverkusen has 35 wins and only 5 draws, in addition to having scored 115 goals for only 31 goals conceded, and aspires to win the treble (Europe League, Bundesliga and German Cup).
Juventus, the next challenge
Leverkusen’s next challenge will be to match Juventus Turin, who in the 2011-2012 season managed 43 games without losing. The streak ended in the final of the Coppa Italia, when they lost to Napoli.
Bayer Leverkusen will face FC Unión Berlin next Saturday, April 6, on Thursday, April 11, they will face West Ham, and if they do not lose in those two games, they will seek to equal Juventus’ streak against Werder Bremen on April 14.
