Berlin (dpa) – Bayer Leverkusen’s head coach Xabi Alonso is set to take over Real Madrid from next season. According to a report by “Radio Marca”, the former Spanish world and European champion will be the successor to Carlo Ancelotti in 2024, who will leave Real and then take over the Brazilian national football team.
Accordingly, the club management chose the 41-year-old, who won the Champions League with the Royals between 2009 and 2014, among other things. Leverkusen’s excellent start with four wins and one draw in the first five Bundesliga games is said to have convinced the bosses in Madrid.
The former midfield strategist Alonso was already considered Real’s top candidate in the spring. But Alonso, who has been under contract with the factory club since October 5, 2022, extended his contract, which runs until 2024, by two years before the start of the season. But according to information from “Bild”, it was agreed in the contract talks that Bayer would not insist on the contract until 2026 if a global club like Real asked.
Xabi Alonso played for Real Sociedad, Liverpool FC, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich and won the Champions League twice (2005/2014) and various other titles in three countries – including three championship titles with Munich, where he ended his playing career in 2017.
