Xabi Alonso Rumored to Move to Real Madrid: Leverkusen’s Brilliant Performance and Contract Clause

Jakarta

Bayer Leverkusen’s brilliant performance at the start of this season made a name for themselves Xabi Alonso rumored to be moving to Real Madrid next season. Even though the 41-year-old coach is under contract until 2026, there is a clause that could make him leave sooner.

Marca, citing BILD, reported that Alonso could terminate his contract at Leverkusen only if there were offers to train from the three teams he played for when he played, namely Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Madrid itself.

This clause applies from next season, so Alonso can focus on continuing the good performance he has currently shown. Leverkusen itself stated that the man from Basque was committed to his contract.

The issue of Alonso going to Madrid has so far been stronger than going to Bayern or Liverpool because Carlo Ancelotti’s contract is only until 2024. Meanwhile, Thomas Tuchel’s contract at Bayern is valid until 2025 and Juergen Klopp is tied to Liverpool until 2026.

Legendary coach Ottmar Hitzfeld commented on these rumors suggesting that Alonso should stay longer at Leverkusen. However, he also understands the difficulty of resisting the temptation that arises when a club as big as Madrid comes to make an offer.

“My recommendation for Xabi is that he stay at Leverkusen until 2025. I think he should return the favor to the team that has given him the opportunity to work as a coach in the Bundesliga,” said Hitzfeld.

“Obviously, it is difficult to say ‘no’ to Madrid if the offer comes,” he explained.
