One by one the dangers of electric cigarettes or vape are starting to be revealed. Although initially considered better than conventional cigarettes, smoking vape turns out to have a risk of severe lung damage, one of which is ‘popcorn lung’.
This condition is also experienced by 17-year-old teenagers in Canada. The teenager developed a rare condition called “popcorn lung” due to his habit of smoking vapes.
The Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) reported that the teenager was admitted to hospital a week after complaining of a persistent cough with fever and difficulty breathing. His lung function rapidly deteriorated, and he ended up on life support for a while.

Lead author of the report and critical care physician at the London Health Sciences Center in Ontario, Canada, Dr Karen Bosma said it was highly likely the teen’s popcorn lung was caused by e-cigarettes containing dangerous compounds. As a result, the teenager had bronchiolitis obliterans.
“Our patient and his family want the public to realize that what happened to him could happen to anyone,” said Dr. Karen.
The teenager required intubation on his fifth day in hospital because of increased work of breathing and tachypnea. His poor lung work initially cost him a lung transplant. Luckily his condition was getting better so he did not have to undergo the procedure.
The term “popcorn lung” originally came from a disease workers in microwave popcorn factories developed nearly two decades ago: a condition called bronchiolitis obliterans. Some of them even had to undergo lung transplants.
