X network blocking begins in Brazil after court order – Diario La Página – 2024-08-31 16:22:42

The blocking of the social network X, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, in Brazil began in the early hours of this Saturday, hours after a Supreme Court judge ordered its suspension, alleging judicial breaches by the platform.

Access to the social media website, formerly known as Twitter, is no longer possible for some users in that South American country, who are faced with a message asking them to reload the browser, but at no point are they able to log in successfully.

The mobile app, on the other hand, no longer offers new content or allows for posting or interactions.

According to local press, the X blackout began with certain internet providers and a total blackout is expected to occur later today, in compliance with the court ruling.

Elon Musk explodes against Brazil
Musk on Friday lashed out at Brazilian Supreme Court (STF) judge Alexandre de Moraes for being a “pseudo-judge” for ordering the suspension of X in Brazil.

“Freedom of expression is the foundation of democracy and an unelected pseudo-judge in Brazil is destroying it for political reasons,” wrote the owner of the X platform, formerly known as Twitter.

The tycoon reacted furiously to the “immediate” suspension of X ordered by Judge De Moraes. Yesterday Musk had already called De Moraes “an evil dictator disguised as a judge.”

In his messages today, he continued to attack the “repressive regime in Brazil” that “is so afraid of letting the people know the truth that it will break anyone who tries.”

And in another post he noted that “attacks on free expression this year are unprecedented in the 20th century,” echoing another message citing measures against X in Brazil, Canada and France.

Judge De Moraes’ sentence is part of an investigation into the dissemination of false news in which the South African businessman is suspected of having committed crimes of obstruction of justice, criminal organization and incitement to crime.

De Moraes said that he made this decision due to X’s “non-compliance with court orders” and “attempt to not submit to the Brazilian legal system” with the intention of “establishing an environment of total impunity and lawlessness.”

In this regard, he ordered the “immediate” suspension until “all court orders are complied with” and the multi-million dollar fines imposed on X are paid.

According to the judge, the platform is also being “instrumentalised” by “extremist groups” through the “massive dissemination of Nazi, fascist, anti-democratic and hate speech” on the eve of the municipal elections, which will be held in October.
