Reunite with the X-Men

More than 30 years have passed since X-Men: The Animated Series captivated audiences and made Marvel’s mutants a household name. Now, in 2024, beloved characters such as Cyclops, Storm, Wolverine, and Jean Grey are preparing to grace TV screens once again in X-Men ’97, a highly anticipated sequel to the original series. With its premiere scheduled for March 20, the show aims to remind fans why X-Men are widely regarded as the greatest of all time.

Legacy Costumes and Nostalgic Clues

Marvel Studios has released a highly anticipated teaser trailer for X-Men ’97, giving fans a taste of what’s to come. The teaser features the core X-Men characters in their classic legacy costumes, a design choice that showrunner Beau DeMayo reveals isn’t just for nostalgia’s sake. “Every design choice is actually a clue to the storylines we’re doing,” DeMayo said. “Nothing is arbitrary.”

DeMayo further elaborates, explaining, “The legacy costumes serve as a nod to Pryde of the X-Men, a 1989 pilot for a failed X-Men animated series. But their purpose in X-Men ’97 is to transport the X-Men back to a time of reflection. They challenge the team to consider what aspects of their past they want to preserve. Was it truly simpler back then, or were they just more naive?

The Continuation and Fan Demands

X-Men ’97 picks up where X-Men: The Animated Series left off with its 1997 finale, “Graduation Day.” The finale featured Charles Xavier’s exile to outer space, leaving the X-Men under the care of Lilandra in the Shi’ar Empire. “Some fans felt like the show was cut short when it ended 30 years ago. Well, now you’re getting that ‘more.’ You’ll finally find out what happened next,” says Lenore Zann, the voice behind Rogue in the new series.

A Twist on the X-Men Narrative

As X-Men ’97 resumes, the mutant superhero team faces a twist in their narrative. Charles Xavier’s dream of peaceful coexistence between mutants and humans is now turned on its head, with Magneto rising as the new leader of the X-Men. DeMayo muses on the context of the ’90s, its social acceptance challenges, and the notion of being different. He adds, “What happens when they get hit with a future they didn’t see coming? What does it feel like to be on the other end when you feel like that future is leaving you behind?”

An Ensemble of Voice Talent

Returning to their iconic roles in X-Men ’97 are accomplished voice actors Cal Dodd, Alison Sealy-Smith, George Buza, Adrian Hough, and Chris Britton. They originated their characters in the original X-Men animated series and are set to deliver again in the sequel series. The cast will be joined by a mix of veteran and newcomer actors, contributing to an eclectic and powerful voice ensemble. Theo James, known for his roles in The White Lotus and Divergent, will also be featured as a fan-favorite character, though further details remain under wraps.

Maintaining Authenticity and Symbolism

The decision to recast some characters in X-Men ’97 has deeper symbolism and aims for greater representation. Showrunner Beau DeMayo explains that choices were made to ensure vocal qualities and a more authentic presence. He cites the Cable-Cyclops relationship as an example, where a more intentional vocal portrayal is necessary to convey the complex dynamics of their father-son bond across timelines.

Furthermore, DeMayo explains the significance of Jean Grey’s portrayal, “Jean Grey is the epitome of empathy. She is the one person who truly understands the sacrifice that is necessary to be an X-Man.” Catherine Disher, the original Jean Grey, returns as the voice actor behind Dr. Valerie Cooper, with an intriguing arc planned for the character in the first season.

Throughout X-Men ’97, DeMayo explores the concept of empathy, dubbing it the key to the future touched upon by Xavier’s dream. He adds, “Empathy is the way into the future.”
