‘The X Factor’ just released all the footage from Harry’s audition. The recordings show that the young star did not immediately prosper. The then 16-year-old singer started singing ‘Soul Sister’, a song by Train. That didn’t sound quite right, though. Fortunately, judge Simon Cowell gave him a second chance. Harry then sang an a cappella version of Stevie Wonder’s ‘Isn’t She Lovely’. And that sounded much better.

He barely survived the auditions. He dropped out again later in the program, but the judges decided to give him another chance. This time as a member of a boy group, along with Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik. One Direction was born. The rest is history.

Earlier this year, the program released never-before-seen footage of the group’s formation. Striking: it was not Harry, but Liam Payne who was labeled as the possible ‘leader’ of the group at the time.
