Würzburg: Virologist calls for a compromise solution in …

In the fight against the new Corona variant “Omikron”, the Würzburg virologist Professor August Stich calls for a compromise solution. From a scientific point of view, another complete lockdown is necessary to contain the spread of the virus. However, from a social point of view, this is neither sensible nor feasible, according to the virologist.

Politicians now have to find a compromise: The spread of Omikron must be slowed down to such an extent that the health system can be maintained, according to the virologist. Public life still has to go on – albeit with restrictions. That is why it is important to act sensibly and considerately, says Stich.

Last week, the first Omikron case was confirmed in Würzburg, and there are three suspected cases in Main-Spessart.

Bund-Länder summit on Tuesday

The federal and state governments will meet on Tuesday to discuss further corona measures. The background is the expanding omicron variant. Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach had already ruled out a lockdown before Christmas on Sunday. According to an initial draft resolution, stricter contact restrictions – also for those who have been vaccinated and those who have recovered – are on the agenda of the special summit.
