Würzburg supports four clubs with 45,000 euros

Würzburg. There is no question that the times for club operators are still difficult: no sooner were the clubs allowed to open their doors after months of the compulsory break than they had to be closed again due to increasing incidences. A small ray of hope is at least the new club bonus, which the city of Würzburg is giving away for the first time to live music venues and music clubs in Würzburg as part of the Corona Special Fund 2021 and which wants to set special accents.

From among all applicants, a jury has now selected four winners – Posthalle, L-Club, Kurt & Komisch and the After all – who will be supported with a total of 45,000 euros. In addition to the quality and number of live music events in 2019, the clubs’ future plans were also able to convince the jury members.

The jury itself was composed of representatives of the umbrella association of independent Würzburg cultural institutions, the Lower Franconia district, a municipal youth culture center and the culture department of the city of Würzburg.

The “Posthalle” is known as a cultural location far beyond the city and region, and receives a maximum of 15,000 euros as a bonus.

In addition to the Muffathalle in Munich, the Posthalle is the largest music venue in Bavaria. Before the pandemic, the hall was an employer for 15 full-time employees, 60 mini-jobbers and up to 20 freelancers, currently all of this has shrunk to a minimum.

In addition to the big concerts with stars, starlets and various disco themes, the areas of promoting young talent and promoting pop culture have been a permanent fixture in the hotel’s program for many years. There are also events from cultural niches that are worthy of subsidy, which ultimately persuaded the jury to set the maximum amount.

The “L” (“L – interactive music club”) in the Aumühle, which has existed since 1998, is awarded a prize of 12,000 euros. In terms of size, the club is the counterpart to the Posthalle, but regional, supra-regional and cross-disciplinary programs take place there too. The often voluntary work of the operator Joachim Rind is characterized by his idealism, because he wants to implement and enable good ideas, a dignified atmosphere in an ambience with originals from the 50s and 60s and good sound in his house. The premium is to be used, among other things, for many renewals, including the technical equipment of the club.

The youth culture meeting “Immerhin” was awarded 9,000 euros. The continuous and long-term voluntary work on the basis of the Protestant youth in the Deanery Würzburg and the wide range of content of the most diverse actors, who after all offer events of the most diverse subcultural facets, including hard rock, metal, punk and experimental genres of art rock and jazz, are particularly honored. After all, this is also known nationwide in the subcultural scenes, even international bands regularly stop here on their tours.

The Kurt & Komisch club in Sanderstraße is also awarded 9,000 euros. As a music venue for contemporary club and live music from various genres, the club is not just about music and celebrations, it is also about social issues, for example for organizations like SeaWatch, “Über den Tellerrand” and Hermine eV As part of an inclusive and respectful model, the club attaches particular importance to topics such as awareness, the promotion of local artists and DJs and the offer of DJ workshops aimed at people who are still underrepresented in classic lineups .

Ingolf Stöcker, employee in the Department of Culture and in this function also a member of the jury, is delighted with the award-winning clubs and live music venues: “This summer, the German Bundestag decided that clubs and live venues with a verifiable cultural reference are no longer as entertainment venues, but as facilities for cultural purposes are defined. We in Würzburg also see this as an important decision for the further development of club cultural diversity in the city and are happy to be able to be a little help to the outstanding representatives of the club and live music venue scene in Würzburg by awarding these prizes to continue their cultural offerings. “
