Last week, everything revolved around physics at the science festival on the market square and in the New University in Würzburg. 17,000 visitors were inspired by the exhibits and experiments on site: the organizers announced an interactive hands-on exhibition, the quiz and science shows, numerous lecture series as well as a tinkering competition for schoolchildren and a science slam.
Around 17,000 viewers also followed the live streams of shows and lectures, went on a virtual tour of the exhibition, discussed chats with researchers or tuned in to the children’s program on the YouTube channel.
The “Highlights of Physics” festival not only celebrated the discovery of X-rays by Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen 125 years ago. In the exhibition or as part of the lecture series, the importance of physics for overcoming urgent challenges, for example for the development of corona vaccines or for the energy transition, was shown.
On Saturday evening, the science festival continued with the sold-out lecture concert? James Bond in the sights of music? by Professor Metin Tolan in collaboration with the Würzburg Philharmonic in the s.Oliver Arena. In autumn 2022, the 21st? Highlights of Physics ?? take place in Regensburg. Solid-state physics will be the main focus.
Science festival
The highlights of physics?? were established in 2001 by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the German Physical Society (DPG). The science festival has attracted up to 60,000 visitors in recent years. It tours from city to city with changing themes: Würzburg was the 20th stop.
For the scientific content, AC-Science-Consulting from Dinslaken is responsible for the conception and implementation of the series. The local scientific management was in the hands of Professor Thomas Trefzger and Katharina Leiter from the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Würzburg.
Partner This year’s event is the city of Würzburg, the Wilhelm and Else Heraeus Foundation, va-Q-tec and the Internet platform Welt der Physik. Main-Post is the media partner. The Vogel Foundation Dr. Eckernkamp, Hitachi and the Sparkasse Mainfranken Würzburg.
