dr Hülya Düber, social affairs officer for the city of Würzburg, makes it clear: “We can only accept the great challenge of appreciative respect and equal treatment together. The mutually enriching picture of a plural society can only be drawn in community. The active majority society is needed in the debate about racism. It is our task of solidarity to ensure that everyone can live without having to experience racism, neither on a small nor on a large scale.”
Coordinated by those responsible for the federal program “live democracy! Würzburg” (cooperation: Social Department of the City of Würzburg and Würzburg Alliance for Democracy and Civil Courage) and designed with ten cooperation partners, a broad and thematically extensive range of lectures and workshops could be developed, which invite reflection and focus on raising awareness. Christine Blum-Köhler, Integration Commissioner of the City of Würzburg thanks all partners. “This joint campaign against racism shows how many initiatives, associations and groups in Würzburg are taking on the task of working together and at different levels for an equal, diverse society.”

The International Weeks Against Racism are action weeks of solidarity. They call for actions and events against racism, for openness and respect and make it clear that there is and must be no place for racism and nationalism in a plural coexistence. The reason for the action weeks is March 21, which the United Nations proclaimed in 1966 as the annual “International Day for the Overcoming of Racial Discrimination”.
This day commemorates the bloody massacre in South Africa, in which 69 demonstrators were shot while they were peacefully demonstrating against the apartheid regime in 1960.
