Western gamers are more familiar with Greek minotaurs or Scandinavian trolls than with creatures from Chinese literature. Black Myth : Wukongreleased on August 20 on PlayStation 5 and PC, takes place in a less explored setting of video game blockbusters (or AAA). It offers to play “a monkey warrior whose task is to find lost relics,” summary Polygon.
The inspiration comes from a 16th century Chinese classic. “Adapter The Pilgrimage to the Westa timeless classic whose themes and characters are still present in the East Asian imagination, is a perilous mission,” comments Jason Rodriguez, a journalist for the American website specializing in video games.
“Les studios Game Science [installés à Shenzhen et Hangzhou] have achieved the impossible: the story is complex, original and sometimes even thought-provoking.”
Jason Rodriguez notes that as a Filipino he had read this epic “a long time ago, in high school” : “I also enjoyed finding many of the characters and plots from the book, in addition to its Buddhist and Taoist teachings.” And the beauty of the settings and environments help to immerse oneself in this world apart.
