After the first case of Dimitrij Ovtcharov and Patrick Franziska, a German outsider is now in the quarter-finals of the international table tennis tournament in Frankfurt am Main.
32-year-old Ricardo Walther defeated Nigeria’s Quadri Aruna in 3-2 sets after saving a match point to move into the last eight on Friday. “It was a good game with a lot of ups and downs. But I’m very happy that I turned it around,” said the Bundesliga professional from ASV Grünwettersbach.
The next opponent Källberg beat the world number one
Walther is only participating in the only major German tournament in the World Table Tennis (WTT) series thanks to a wild card. He won the European Team Championships with the German national team in 2017. At the following five major tournaments he was only rated again by the national coach Jörg Roßkopf.
Walther’s seasonal opponent in Frankfurt is an even bigger surprise. Swede Anton Källberg from German champion Borussia Düsseldorf clearly defeated world number one Wang Chuqin from China in 3-0 sets.
