WTA: Leylah Annie Fernandez gets her ticket to the main draw of the Cincinnati tournament

Canadian Leylah Annie Fernandez secured her ticket to the WTA tournament in Cincinnati by defeating American Kristie Ahn 6-4, 6-1 in her second qualifying game on Friday afternoon.

Fernandez, who ranks 111th in the world, has won all four of her races in the past two days, defeating second seed in qualifying, Russian Anna Blinkova, on Thursday.

Fernandez converted five of his eight breakages on Friday. Ahn, the 97th racket in the world, only won 40.7% of his points on serve.

Fernandez is the only Canadian player to compete in the Western and Southern Open. On the men’s side, Félix Auger-Aliassime, Denis Shapovalov and Milos Raonic will also take part in the tournament.

All four have also entered the United States Open.

The Cincinnati tournament is exceptionally played at Flushing Meadows this year, due to the COVID-19 context.

It will be followed by the US Open, played at the same venue from August 31 to September 13.
