It’s safe to say it was a failure of the organizers, who didn’t anticipate that the weather on the Mexican coast would play tricks all the time at this time of year. Tennis players complain about uneven courts and gusty winds, and matches are constantly interrupted, postponed or delayed by rain. The semi-final, in which Jessica Pegula (5th WTA) defeated Coco Gauff (3rd WTA) 6:2, 6:1, was still held. Just after the match started, Iga Świątek’s condition worsened again.
Świątek and Sabalenka managed to play less than four games in extremely gusty winds. Then the match was interrupted and they waited for almost two hours for the weather to improve. Nothing of that. At the moment, the Pole is leading 2:1, 30:30 and with this result the competition will be completed on Sunday evening Polish time… At least these are the plans.

According to the organizers’ assumptions, the semi-final between Iga Świątek and Aryna Sabalenka will be resumed on Sunday, November 5, after… 22:30 Polish time. Will this really be the case? It’s hard to be optimistic since as many as three doubles matches are to be played on the court on the same day, and the session starts at 6:30 p.m. Each of these clashes may also be prolonged due to the weather, which may result in further delays.
